What is the IMPACT at Heartland Leadership Program?
We take the best and the brightest early career professionals, provide them with fast-paced learning and growth experiences during a 12-month program, and place them into a full-time role within the area of their career aspirations at the end of the 12 months… if they rise to the occasion. Nothing is given, it is earned in the IMPACT program. Participants who earn their placement in a full-time position move on to an accelerated career path that will culminate in a leadership position within 1-3 years.
This is Not an Internship
This is a real job designed for high-potential individuals to achieve success in a managerial or leadership role with opportunities for rapid growth in our organization.
IMPACT program associates are not limited to a career in banking. Opportunities for placement are also available in other areas of interest such as Human Resources, Risk and Fraud, Project Management, and Information Technology.
IMPACT Associates are provided a robust and intensive 12-month experience intended on empowering them to be leaders and influencers across the Heartland footprint. In the first three months, program participants enter the Heartland Academy which consists of three components – The Heartland Story, Banking 101, and Leadership Development. The Heartland Story provides participants with in-depth insight into our strategy, history, lines of business and products, our customer base and competitive edge, and the unique profiles of our Member Banks. Regardless of the career path participants are on, they are provided with essential knowledge in the fundamentals of banking in our Banking 101 curriculum.
Finally, our Leadership Development program provides IMPACT associates with knowledge and skills in influence and persuasion and management and leadership. In the final nine months of the program, participants enter the Immersive Career Development phase where they embark on an intensive and specialized training program within the area of their selected career path and desired full-time placement. Throughout the program, participants will be provided with opportunities to network and learn from the top executives and leaders in our company.
These specialized experiences will enable program participants to become key influencers – uniquely positioned as partners with leaders across our footprint while our organization continues to evolve.

What Does My Future Look Like?
Each year we will assess the emerging needs of the organization and identify the key roles candidates can apply for. In 2021, the following areas have been identified:
The IMPACT Associate’s learning program will primarily focus on applications development and support. The Applications Administrator/Developer implements and supports application systems across the enterprise. This includes installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing enterprise software. This person will also troubleshoot performance issues. This role will also have responsibilities of developing, configuring, testing, and implementing various process automations in test and production environments.
Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science and/or related fields would be a typical route.
The IMPACT Associate will primarily rotate through Enterprise Risk Management, Financial Crimes Risk Management and Corporate Compliance departments within Risk Management. The rotation will provide the candidate with an overview of each area and a better understanding of the risk management areas overall. This will also include opportunities to assist in substantive projects, initiatives and workflow processes. The candidate will gain exposure to Financial Crimes Risk Management, Compliance, and Enterprise Risk Management to prepare them for a career path as an Enterprise Risk Management Specialist, Compliance Fair and Responsible Banking Specialist, Financial Crimes Risk Management Analyst, or Fraud Analyst.
Bachelor's Degree Education required in Finance, Economics, Business Management, Statistics, Computer Science, Criminal Justice and/or related fields would be a typical route.
Learning and Development
The IMPACT Associate’s primary learning program will develop the skills and knowledge to transition into a Learning and Development Facilitator. The Learning and Development Facilitator is responsible for increasing the quality of leadership behaviors at frontline and mid-level manager levels. This role engages leaders through structured facilitation, ongoing coaching, and contributing to the design and development of highly interactive, learner focused leadership development programs. The Learning and Development Facilitator supports larger organization strategies including, but not limited to skills-based coaching, individual development plans, employee engagement initiatives, internship training programs, and merger integration support. This role partners with an extended network of leaders within the organization to provide insight into the corporate leadership and in support of succession planning efforts.
Bachelor's Degree Education in Human Resources, Communications, Business Education, Corporate Learning, Instructional Design and/or related fields would be a typical route.
The Wealth Management IMPACT Associate will work closely with the Wealth Management/Investment team to build a core understanding of investment research, portfolio management, financial planning, and overall wealth management business operations. The duties and responsibilities will create a foundational understanding of the industry generally, and our department specifically, and allow for multiple career paths within the Heartland Wealth Management division including a Wealth Advisor, Client Portfolio Manager, and Portfolio Manager/Research Associate.
Bachelor's Degree Education in Business, Accounting, Finance or Economics would be a typical route.
Credit – Portfolio Manager to Commercial Banker Track
The IMPACT Associate’s primary learning program will develop the skills and knowledge to transition into a Portfolio Manager position which is responsible for underwriting Commercial and Ag credit exposures, consisting of gathering, analyzing and interpreting credit and financial information for existing and prospective customers to assess credit quality and minimize risk and potential loss. In addition, the Portfolio Manager assists the Commercial Banker in managing their client relationships. Many, but not all Portfolio Managers aspire to become Commercial Bankers. The Commercial Banker is responsible for originating new commercial relationships and the cross selling of existing clients. Focuses on growing deposits, loans and fee income in a profitable manner.
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration/Management, Finance, Accounting and/or related fields would be a typical route.
Commercial – Treasury Management and Card Services
The IMPACT Associate’s primary learning program will develop the skills and knowledge to transition into a Treasury and Payment Solutions Sales Analyst. Under general direction, the Treasury and Payment Solutions (TPS) Sales Analyst supports the Treasury Management Officers and Sales Consultants to grow TPS revenue. This position is responsible for the creation, analysis and delivery of proposals, RFPs, and sales presentations. The Sales Analyst performs pre-call planning, preparation and participates in joint sales calls with TMOs, SCs, and Commercial Bankers. Additionally, this position is responsible for identifying cross sale opportunities, and for inside sales of small business clients. Responsibilities include providing a high level of internal customer support; understanding and driving the sales culture and vision of the organization within the member banks, maintaining and delivering reporting and metrics; and managing all additional aspects of sales support in the sub lines of business. Career Opportunities on this track can be the Treasury and Payment Solution Sales Analyst, CPS Analyst, or CPS Account Manager.
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration/Management, Finance and/or related fields would be a typical route.
Consumer Digital Strategy
The IMPACT Associate’s primary learning program will develop the skills and knowledge to transition into a Digital Strategist. The Digital Strategist assists in the strategic planning, research and development of online delivery channels for consumer products and services offered by the bank subsidiaries of Heartland Financial USA, Inc. This position is responsible for aligning research into innovative initiatives that improve business performance, accelerate growth, and enhance Heartland's reputation as a digital financial services partner for its customers.
Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, or IT would be a typical route.
The Finance department at Heartland Financial supports executives and line managers in making strong financial decisions and monitoring the financial health of the company while improving profitability. The IMPACT Associate’s primary learning program will develop the skills and knowledge to transition into a Financial Budgeting and Forecasting position which supports and promotes a continuous improvement measurement process and culture.
Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Data Analytics, and/or related fields would be a typical route.
Vendor Management and Procurement
Vendor Management and Procurement is primarily responsible for the design and implementation of the overall vendor program. The IMPACT Associate’s primary learning program will develop the skills and knowledge to transition into a Vendor Management position, overseeing end-to-end vendor lifecycle management, enabling the organization to control costs, mitigate risks, drive service excellence and gain increased value from vendors throughout contract life cycles; managing the selection of appropriate vendors, and optimizing the development, management and control of vendor contracts, relationships and performance for the efficient delivery of contracted products and services; coordinating with senior leaders and their support staff leading a variety of vendor sourcing and management activities across the enterprise.
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Management, Finance and/or related fields would be a typical route.
Where Can the IMPACT Program Take Me?
Heartland has opportunities in both of its headquarters in Dubuque, IA, and Denver, CO, and across our 11 member banks in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Montana and California.
While some of the career opportunities available to program participants can be pursued remotely, others may require relocation.
